Dog Foster Application

Thank you for considering opening up your home to a dog in need.

We accept foster homes in Calgary, Didsbury, Sundre, Carstairs, Olds, Innisfail, Red Deer, Edmonton, Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane, Strathmore, Medicine Hat, Tilley, Canmore, and Okotoks.

To become an approved foster home please start by completing the foster application below. One of our volunteers will be in touch within two business days via email to set up a phone call and home visit.

Which dog are you applying to meet? Why do you think this peticular dog will be a good match for your home, family and lifestyle?

Are all residents of your household on board for adopting this dog? Have you had a family discussion?

Does anyone in your household have allergies to animals? Please explain.

When do you intend to bring your new pet into your home? Our adoption process is thorough but can be quick. Please only apply when you are ready to meet and bring home a new pet.

Please list all the pets living in your household including breed, age, energy level, temperament and any other details.

Are your pets spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccinations?

If you have resident pets, how do you plan to introduce them to your new pet?

What are you looking for in a new companion? (Size, energy level, personality)

Where will the dog stay when you are not home, at work or on vacation?

Where will the dog sleep at night?

What does your household routine look like, and how often will the dog be left alone?

Are you willing and financially able to provide your dog with a good quality diet, grooming, yearly vetting and training? How much do you plan to budget for your new dog each year?

How active are you and how often will the dog be exercised?

Do you own or rent your home? Please note that if you rent we require a formal written and signed approval from your landlord.

What is your back up plan for your dog if something were to happen to you? Where would they go/live?

Have you read the dog’s bio thoroughly? What do you think you will need to focus on in the first couple months with your new companion?

Have you ever rehomed a pet or surrendered a pet to a shelter or rescue? Please explain in detail.

Have you ever adopted a pet before? What was the biggest challenge you faced with your newly adopted pet? Please explain.

We require adopters who are adopting a puppy (under one year) to attend a puppy class of their choice with a certified force free/reward based trainer or facility, do you agree?

Do you plan to use a trainer, groomer, daycare or boarding facility? If so, which company?

Ruff Start Rescue Society is a force-free/reward based rescue organization that works solely with certified professionals. Do you agree to educate yourself and your family on what it means to be force free/reward based? If you have experience in this area, please explain.

Have you applied to meet any other dogs that you are considering adopting? If so, when are you meeting the other dog?

Do you have any upcoming travel or time away where your new dog will not be able to accompany you? If yes, what is the plan for your new companion?

Adopting a dog is a lifetime commitment. Do you understand that this commitment can be up to 15 years? Are you willing and able to make this commitment?

If the dog you applied for is unavailable, are you willing to work with us to match you with another dog that fits your criteria?
